Why do we have pain? In our physical bodies, when we experience pain, it is the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong and that we need to STOP and pay attention to what is hurting. Without pain we may not even know that something is wrong, and we certainly can’t do anything about it. And thus, even though it hurts, we are grateful for our bodies’ ability to show us pain when we need it.
If you sprain your ankle it is going to hurt. You may or may not be able to SEE anything wrong from the outside, but you KNOW that it is because of the pain. So what do you do? Maybe you grab an ice pack, or a couple of Tylenol. Maybe you find your favorite pain-relieving salve or some ibuprofen. There are lots of different ways to treat the pain caused by a sprained ankle. What is your go-to method?
Have you ever wondered WHY there are so many different kinds of pain-relieving techniques? Have you ever noticed that someone else you know has a totally different way of addressing their pain? It makes sense that there are so many different ways to treat pain in our bodies because different ways work for different people. The same idea is true for the challenges and frustration people experience with dyslexia, ADHD, SPD etc.
Those challenges with reading, writing, math, and/or attention and focus that you are experiencing are your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. You need to STOP, pay attention, and be grateful, because now you can do something about it.
Maybe you have stopped and paid attention. Maybe you tried tutoring and it didn’t work. Maybe you tried medication and you didn’t like the side effects. Maybe you tried a phonics-based reading program, and it helped some but reading and writing are still hard. You are still frustrated because you KNOW that the thing that should be easier isn’t. It still hurts. So now what?
Most programs and techniques out there are designed to help neurotypical, or linear thinking, people to succeed in these areas. You already know that you think and learn differently. If this were not true, then you would have solved your problem and moved on. But you haven’t,
